BattleFort Sumter: Union Captian Anderson was positioned in South Carolina before the state seceded. Confederates demanded that Anderson surrender the fort. Anderson refused, Confederate opened fire for 34 hours, Anderson surrendered on April 14.
1st Bull Run: The first major battle of the Civil War, the Union outnumbered, lost the battle. This told Linlcon that this would be a long and costly war. Shiloh: General Ulysses S. Grant's troops and General Buell were surronded by Confederate troops, it looked like another victory for the Confederate, but General Johnston was mortally wounded. General Beauregard broke contact with the Yankees and retreated. Antientam: Lee's troops were outnumbered, but continued battling despite the crippling casualties. Many soldiers on both side killed, Union drove Lee's army away, Union didn't vigorously pursue the wounded army. Gettysburg: Confederate troops defeated the Union troops on the first day of the battle, on the second day, the Union troops defeated the Confederate troops. Pickett's Charge, an assault of 12,000 Confederate soldiers was defeated by the Union Artillery. Lee retreated back to Virginia. More than 50,000 dead, wounded, or missing. Vicksburg: Union Commander, Ulysses S. Grant, attacked John C. Pemberton's Confederate Army near the city of Vicksburg. Grant forced Pemberton to retreat to Vicksburg. Fearing more casualties, Grant decided to lay siege on the city instead of attacking it. Sherman's March: Union Commander, William T. Sherman, left the captured city of Atlanta to try and capture the Confederate ports, which would cut of their economy and supplies. On his way towards the port, Sherman used total warfare, which meant that he burnt down the Confederate towns that he captured so they could not regain strength. Appomattox Courthouse: Union infantry from the North and the West had encircled Robert E. Lee's army. The Union army pressed on Lee's army. Lee finally surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in the Appomattox Courthouse. Palmito Ranch: Final battle of the Civil War, Union troops attacked camp of Confederate soldiers near Palmito Ranch. Confederate learned about the Union whereabouts from Mexicans along the Rio Grande. Union were forced to retreat. |

The Union (The North)Nicknames: Yankees, Federals, Union
Strategies for Winning the War: Tried to cut off the Confederate economy by capturing their ports, take control of the Mississippi River, and capture Richmond (capital of the Confederate States) Disadvantages: Most were unfamiliar with the land since most of the battles occurred in the South, weak motivation, inexperienced officers, underestimated the power of the South and thought the war was going to be quickly won by the North. Advantages: Vast population, larger army, leadership of Abraham Lincoln, advanced weapons, the North had many factories to supply the army, had more means of transportation making it easy to transport supplies. |

Strategies for Winning the War: Fight a defensive war, lead the northerners to the South to fight, counted on help from Europe, and they would capture the Capital of the Union, Washington DC Disadvantages: Small Army, Most of the population were slaves which wouldn't serve in the military, few transportation methods, hard to receive supplies, had no navy. Advantages: Many of the best officers in the American Armies were from the South, were determined to win the war, familiar with the lands that they were battling on, skilled soldiers. |
