If i needed to write an essay about a hero, I would write about Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was the President of the United States during the Great Depression and World War 2. He had poliomyelitis for most of his life which made him paralyzed from under the waist.He helped win WW2 and end the Great Depression.

Ulysses S. Grant: Lead the Union army, believed in total warfare, Irvin McDowell: Appointed to lead Union Army at the beginning of the war, instructor of West Point after the war, George B. McCellan: Fired by Lincoln because he didn't chase after Lee after the Battle of Antietam. George C. Meade: Leader of the Union army, Ambrose Burnside: Created "sideburns", Mexican War veteran, leader of the Union Army Joseph Hooker: Commander of the Union Army, nicknamed "Fighting Joe", William T. Sherman: Grant's most able commander, used "total war" strategy |
Confederate LeadersJefferson Davis: President of the Confederacy, served in the Mexican War, grew up in Mississippi.
Robert E. Lee: Commander of the Confederate Army, P.G.T. Beauregard: Gave order to fire at Fort Sumter, first shot of the war, Mexican War veteran Albert S. Johnson: Texan, shot in the leg and died at the Battle of Shiloh Thomas Stonewall Jackson: Commander at the first major battle of the Civil War, nicknamed after the Confederates saw his troops J.E.B. Most of all these leaders have graduated from West Point, a military academy. The South seems to have more stable leadership due to the North changing leaders constantly while the South was under the command of only one leader. The quality of leadership is important because the leader decides what the soldiers should do and plans out the attacks.
Other Important Leaders
John Brown: Raised by religious abolitionists, John Brown became one of the most famous abolitionists in that time. He was the first to resort to violence over the issue of slavery. He believed that slavery was a sin against God and devoted his life to try and end it. He planned to raid the Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He thought that slaves from the nearby plantations would come to his aide. His raid succeeded, but he was captured. Brown was charged with treason to the state of Virginia and was hanged on December 2, 1859.
Harriet B. Stowe: Born in 1811, she was raised by religious parents, she was the seventh out of the seven children. She was an abolitionist, she wrote the famous book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, which described life of a slave on a plantation, this book enraged the South.
Dred Scott: A slave that belonged to a military doctor named, John Emerson. Emerson moved his family from slave states to free states. When Emerson died, Scott decided to sue Emerson's wife for his freedom, the case eventually made it up to the Supreme Court. The Court decided: 1. Since Scott was a slave, he wasn't a citizen therefore he couldn't bring a case to court. 2. The Missouri Compromise could not prevent slavery in certain places was declared unconstitutional.
