Since the North and South were very different from one another, the country felt divided. Sectionalism, loyalty to a particular region of the country, was very strong in both the North and the South. The Civil War was based mainly on slavery and sectionalism, the North and South didn't fight mainly about slavery, they fought to prove their region was better than the other.
